Romance Book Guide

Romance Bookstores by State

By Romance Book Guide Editorial · Last checked October 2026

Romance bookstores are shops that sell only or mostly love stories, and the U.S. had about 235 with real storefronts as of September 30, 2026, according to the Romance Bookstore Directory. Below are 107 listings we checked, sorted by state, with published addresses or pop-up areas. If none is nearby, several romance shops will mail books to you.

Ten years ago, The Ripped Bodice had just opened. Now, the shops in this list reach across 45 states. Many of these shops sort books by trope and even by how steamy they are, so you can walk in and ask for "closed-door small-town" or "dark and spicy" and nobody blinks.

Store details checked: October 23, 2026. Small shops move and change hours often, so check the store's own site before a long drive.

Find a romance bookstore in your state

This list has 107 shop listings in 45 states that sell only or mostly romance. We checked the published information on October 23, 2026, using store sites, official profiles and dated reporting. Each state shows up to three main picks, with more under "Also in." We couldn't confirm a current in-person listing that meets our rule in five states or inside Washington, D.C. You'll find local leads and regional options for those right after the list.

How to read it: Opened gives the store or format opening identified in the row; earlier pop-ups and moves are noted where confirmed. Ships? says "Yes" only if the store's own site showed shipping when we checked. "Via Bookshop.org" means you can order online through Bookshop.org, which sends part of the sale to that shop. "Check store" means we couldn't confirm shipping. We don't list hours because small shops change them often. The count is of the entries shown, with branches grouped as listed; mobile and pop-up entries are labeled. It is not a count of unique businesses or physical storefronts.

States where we couldn't confirm a romance bookstore

As of October 23, 2026, we couldn't confirm a current in-person listing that meets this guide's rule in Delaware, Mississippi, New Hampshire, North Dakota or Vermont, or inside Washington, D.C. That doesn't mean there isn't one. New shops open almost every month.

Regional options on this list:

  • Washington, D.C.: Friends to Lovers, across the river in Alexandria, Virginia.
  • Delaware: Salty Girl Books runs a romance-and-thriller book truck in the Delaware beaches area; its romance share was not established. The Naughty Nook Bookshop offers online books and has held Middletown pop-ups; confirm its current event schedule. Both are uncounted alternatives. For a specialist storefront, try Kiss & Tale (Collingswood, New Jersey) or Romance-Landia (Centreville, Maryland).
  • New Hampshire and Vermont: Lovestruck Books (Cambridge, Massachusetts) or Grump & Sunshine (Portland, Maine).
  • North Dakota: Larkspur Daisy in Mandan sells romance and other books alongside baby goods. We did not establish that it meets this guide's mostly-romance threshold.
  • Mississippi: The Secret Garden Bookery is a romance-and-fantasy business in DeSoto County with online ordering and past pop-ups. We did not confirm a current regular in-person schedule; check its official links and events before making a trip. This supplemental lead is not counted in the directory.

For a much bigger list, including pop-ups and online-only shops, try the Romance Bookstore Directory from Romancing the Data. Know a shop we missed? Tell us about it by choosing "A correction to a page." We check it before we add it.

Check before you go: recent moves and closures

Small shops move, close for a remodel, or change addresses more than you'd think. Lots of older lists online still send people to the old spot. If your plans include any shop below, check its current visiting notice; a future address is not a confirmed reopening.

Check before you go: recent moves and closures

Swoon Booksellers (Greenville area, SC)The mobile shop announced it closed in July 2026Kept here as a closure update; not counted in the state directory
The Romance Era Bookshop (Vancouver, WA)Its old web address now leads to an unrelated site; we could not confirm a current storefrontDon't use the old link. It's not on our list

A few more things to know before a trip:

  • Stairs: The Broken Spine (Philadelphia) says its lower-level shop can only be reached by stairs. Lit Actually (Baldwinsville, NY) is on a second floor. If stairs are a problem, ask the store before you go.
  • What's on the shelf: Grand Gesture Books says its online list doesn't match what's in the store. Many small shops work the same way. If you want one certain book, call or message first.
  • Age rules: The New Romantics says its events are for ages 18 and up unless the event says otherwise. That's an event rule, not a rule for shopping. Passionate Pages keeps its spiciest books in a separate adults-only area.
  • Hours: Hearts on Fire (Boise) posts special hours on its Google listing. Thirst Books (Milwaukee) is open by appointment on some days.

Romance bookstores that ship in the U.S.

No romance bookstore near you? You can still buy from one. These shops showed online ordering with shipping on their own sites when we checked on October 23, 2026. Shipping costs, destinations and free-shipping minimums change, so check your cart before you pay. The New Romantics, for example, does not ship to P.O. boxes or military addresses.

An online-only option for closed-door readers

The Blush Book Shop focuses on closed-door romance and ships orders. We did not confirm a walk-in location, so it is not included in the state-directory count. This is a different business from Blush in Dallas.

Shops you can buy from through Bookshop.org

Many romance shops also offer ordering through Bookshop.org (print books and ebooks) or Libro.fm (audiobooks), and part of each sale goes to the shop you pick. Just make sure you're on that shop's own page so your order counts for them.

Shops in our list with these ordering options: Spicy Librarian, A Novel Romance, Grand Gesture Books, Good Girl Books, Why Choose, Book Club & Co., Beguiled Books, plus Blush & Bashful, Read My Lips, Hey Darling, Hardcovers, Swoon Books & Wine, Beauty and the Book and The Romantics Archive (find them by name on Bookshop.org).

Rather read on Kindle?

Formats depend on the shop. Bookshop.org also sells ebooks, usually read in its app or a browser; DRM-free titles are an exception that can be transferred to other readers. If you'd rather borrow ebooks with a subscription, our Kindle Unlimited romance books guide shows how to check that a book is really included. Not every Kindle ebook is part of Kindle Unlimited.

How romance bookstores show spice level

A lot of romance shops now tell you how much sex is in a book before you buy it. They might use pepper icons, a numbered scale, a closed-door shelf or a separate adults-only room. But each shop draws its own lines, so two peppers at one store aren't the same as two peppers at another.

Two terms you'll see everywhere: closed-door means any sex happens off the page, or the scene ends before it gets explicit. Open-door means sex is shown on the page.

Here's what we saw on store sites or in dated news stories, checked October 23, 2026:

How to ask for the kind of romance you want

Tell the bookseller what you want on the page, not just a number of peppers. They can help a lot faster when you name your line.

Say you just finished a sweet small-town romance and want the same warm feeling, but nothing explicit. You could say: "I want small-town romance with no sex scenes on the page, a happy ending, and nothing too dark." That one sentence covers heat, ending and mood. A good bookseller can work with that.

Questions worth asking:

  • "Is the bedroom door closed, or are the scenes on the page?"
  • "Does this book end happily, or does the story keep going in the next book?"
  • "Is there anything heavy in it, like violence, grief or abuse?" Heat level and hard topics are two different things.
  • "Is there swearing? Any faith themes?" A clean book can still have strong language. And a faith-based book isn't the same thing as a clean one.

At Romance Book Guide, we describe sex on the page with four plain labels: no sexual scenes on the page, fade to black, some on-page intimacy and open-door. You can use those same words with any store's scale. Here's how we describe content.

Want to put your taste into words before you go? Pick a mood, a setting and how much intimacy you want, then copy the result and show it to the bookseller.

A shop's label is a starting point, not a promise about every book on the shelf. If one thing really matters to you, ask about that specific book.

What to expect inside a romance bookstore

A romance bookstore is mostly romance, and the books are often sorted by subgenre or trope instead of just by author. The people who work there read the genre and can match you to a book fast. Many shops add something extra, like coffee, wine, used books or special editions.

  • Shelves sorted by trope or subgenre. A trope is a familiar story pattern, like enemies to lovers or fake dating. The Love Potion Library shelves by trope. Lagg divides an old house into subgenre sections. Slow Burn Bookshop has a whole room for monster and paranormal romance.
  • Blind dates with a book. These are books wrapped in paper with a few clue words written on the front. You buy one without seeing the cover. Look for them at The Ripped Bodice, Forced Proximity, HEA Book Boutique, Thirst Books and Dust & Blush.
  • Signed and special editions. Special editions often have sprayed or painted page edges and extra art. Look for them at Flutter, Love Affair, Miss Willa's and The Ripped Bodice.
  • Used books and trade-ins. Try The Spice Cabinet, Shelf Indulgence and The Little Bubblegum Bookshop.
  • Coffee, wine and treats. Lovestruck Books has a café and wine bar. The Love Potion Library serves beer and wine. Swoon Books & Wine has a wine bar. Book Club & Co. sells macarons. Love Spell Books has a coffee bar.
  • Book clubs and events. Almost all of these shops host something: release parties, author signings, craft nights.
  • Not just spicy books. Several shops keep closed-door and teen-friendly shelves (see the spice table).

Words you'll see on the shelves

  • HEA: Happily ever after. The couple ends up together for good.
  • HFN: Happy for now. A hopeful ending that leaves the future a little open.
  • Romantasy: Romance mixed with fantasy, where the love story matters as much as the magic.
  • Dark romance: Romance that includes heavy or disturbing themes, such as violence or morally gray leads. Check each book's content notes.
  • Why choose: One main character ends up with more than one partner instead of choosing just one.
  • Monster romance: One of the leads isn't human. The label can overlap with vampire and shifter romance.
  • Omegaverse: A romance subgenre with its own made-up rules about rank and mating. It's usually explicit.
  • Closed-door / open-door: Whether sex happens off the page or on it.

Romance bookstore or a regular bookstore's romance shelf?

A general bookstore might have one or two shelves of romance. A romance shop carries many more indie and self-published authors, subgenres you rarely see anywhere else, and staff who can find "grumpy cowboy, closed-door, happy ending" in a minute. If you just want this week's bestseller, any store will do. If you want something specific, a romance shop will get you there faster. Lots of general indie bookstores love romance too. Bookstore Romance Day's store list is a good way to find them, but keep in mind most of those shops aren't romance-only.

Planning a romance bookstore trip

Pick a city with two or more shops, and check each store's hours the same week you go. These cities and regions have more than one shop, based on our list. Check driving times: the regional routes are not walkable bookstore crawls.

  • Pittsburgh: Passionate Pages and The Shelf Love Society, on the same street.
  • The Salt Lake City area: Lovebound Library (Salt Lake City), Lagg (Lehi) and The Romantics Archive (Ogden).
  • Southern California: The Ripped Bodice (Culver City), Heartbound (Anaheim) and Meet Cute (La Mesa).
  • Colorado's Front Range: Spicy Librarian (Denver), The Romance Section (Boulder) and Cherry on Top (Fort Collins).
  • The Milwaukee area: Thirst Books and The Well Red Damsel, both on West North Avenue.
  • Seattle: Lovestruck in Seattle and Beguiled Books, plus Hardcovers (Mill Creek) and Shelf Indulgence (Tacoma).
  • Philadelphia, plus a hop over to New Jersey: Cupid's Bookshop and The Broken Spine in the city, with Kiss & Tale just across the river in Collingswood.

Who opened the first romance bookstore in each state?

The Ripped Bodice in Culver City is widely called the first romance-only bookstore in the U.S. (2016). State "firsts" are messier. Stores and local news often claim the title, and sometimes two shops claim it at once. This table shows who was called first, who said so, and the opening dates we could document. A pop-up, a soft opening and a permanent storefront can produce different claims.

How we checked these stores

We put a shop on this list only if its own site, official profile or dated reporting showed that it sells only or mostly romance. We checked those sources on October 23, 2026 and separated known closures and moves without a dated reopening plan from the main list. We didn't visit these stores or call them, and no store paid to be listed.

Romance Book Guide helps you find romance books that feel like your kind of love story — comparing real books by setting, relationship, content level and ending, with the author or publisher information behind every pick, so you can choose your next read with confidence. For this guide, that same habit means we show where each store detail came from.

What gets a shop on the list

  • It sells only or mostly romance, according to the shop itself or local news. Shops that mix romance with fantasy, gifts, food or one other genre can still qualify. We say so in the row.
  • It has a storefront, a regular mobile shop or regular pop-ups. We label which one.
  • Each state has up to three main picks, with more under "Also in." The order inside a state is just for browsing. It's not a ranking.

What we left out on purpose

  • General bookstores with good romance shelves. Try Bookstore Romance Day's list for those.
  • Shops whose current in-person operation we could not confirm, unless a brief closure or move has a dated reopening plan that we flag; and shops whose old web address now goes to an unrelated site.
  • A romance shelf inside a general store, unless it runs as its own named shop. Open Door Romance, Book Club & Co. and Love Stories are labeled "Inside another shop."

Where each detail came from

A store isn't a book, so we describe our store sources in our own way: Store site (the shop's own website), Store profile (its official social or retail profile), News report (dated reporting), Directory listing (a named directory entry) and Not verified (we couldn't confirm the particular detail). These describe store evidence checked October 23, 2026; they do not replace our evidence labels for individual books. Addresses come from the shop's own site whenever we could read it. A few come from a dated news story or a local business listing.

Our business, in one line: There are no affiliate links, paid spots or free products on this page. Here's how Romance Book Guide makes money. Romance Book Guide is run by Kozi Publishing LLC.

Research note: We checked store websites, official profiles and dated reporting on October 23, 2026. Some pages were available only through indexed text, and some earlier source checks could not be independently repeated; we retain supported facts and link the evidence beside the relevant details. A dated opening report is evidence of that opening, not a guarantee that the door is open today. We found shops through the Romance Bookstore Directory (Romancing the Data), author Sarina Bowen's list, local news and Bookstore Romance Day's store list, then confirmed each shop on its own. Opening dates come from the store or from news coverage. We didn't confirm hours, prices or what's in stock, and we didn't visit or call any store. Spice-label details come from store sites or the news report named in the table. We may use software, including AI, to help organize research and drafting, and we're responsible for everything we publish. Store details checked: October 23, 2026.

Where to go next

Once you know where to shop, the next question is what to ask for. Start with the thing that matters most to you.

Quick answers to a few more questions

Do I have to be 18 to shop at a romance bookstore? It depends on the shop. Some shops have teen shelves (FMC Books and Tropes & Trifles do); a teen shelf does not establish every book's suitability for every reader. A few keep their most explicit books in a separate adults-only area, like Passionate Pages, and some events are for adults only. Check the shop's rules before you bring a younger reader.

Can I sell or trade my used romance books? At some shops, yes. Shelf Indulgence in Tacoma gives store credit for romance trade-ins by appointment. Romantasy Bookstore in New Jersey runs a buyback program. The Spice Cabinet in Connecticut hosts book swaps. Rules change, so ask the shop first.

Why isn't my local romance bookstore on this list? We list up to three main shops per state, plus a few more under "Also in," and we only add a shop after we've confirmed it. If yours is open and sells mostly romance, tell us about it, and we'll check it for the next update.
